I. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Wind Ensemble is a year-long course open to any 10th, 11th, or 12th grade student who is interested in continuing their instrumental musical study at an accelerated pace. Acceptance to this class is by audition in the spring based on music literacy and instrumental technique. Other criteria include attitude, potential for growth, and past performance. Private instruction is recommended but not required. The director will make the final selections for this performing ensemble. Self- motivation and an attitude toward high standards of performance is required to be successful in this class. Outside of performance, students will also learn about music history and culture, analyze music, and create their own compositions/arrangements.
II. SCHOOL-OWNED INSTRUMENTS:
Those students who borrow an instrument from the school will be required to sign an "Instrument Loan Contract." This is an agreement to replace/repair the instrument if it is destroyed or broken while in their care.
III. WIND ENSEMBLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Respect all individuals, opinions and abilities
2. Learn individual music and be a contributing member of the band
3. Tag all instrument cases with the proper identification
4. Store instruments and music in their assigned area
5. Keep property (instruments, books, music, equipment, etc.) in good condition
IV. REHEARSAL EXPECTATIONS:
1. Arrive to rehearsal on time
2. Have music on your stand in rehearsal order as it appears on the white board
3. Warm up in an appropriate fashion
4. Be prepared to play during EACH class day
5. Have a pencil to mark your music (NO PENS)
6. Listen when another student or the director is speaking
7. Good posture when playing
8. No food, gum, candy, cough drops or soda during rehearsal. Bottled water is ok.
9. While in rehearsal, a student will only do band work and not work from another class
10. Cell phones will not be allowed during rehearsal
Students, parents, and teachers need to keep an open communication channel if educational success is to occur. If any concern arises inside or outside of the classroom, please contact me directly using my contact information on the front cover. Likewise, I will try to keep you as readily informed of what is going on at school as possible. PowerSchool is a great tool, so check it often. Also, please talk to your children about what is going on in class and encourage them to be proactive when it comes to their progress and grades.
If a discipline issue should occur, the director will correct the misbehavior using a three strikes system. If a severe level of discipline arises, Step 3 actions may take place immediately.

• The director will follow the discipline policies of KHS which will include parent/legal guardian phone contact, administrative referral, and as a last resort, a formal meeting of the parent/legal guardian, student, director, and administrator.
VII. HOMEWORK / LATE ASSIGNMENTS:
If a student misses school, it is their responsibility to get the assignment from the teacher via e-mail or in person. A student has one class period for every missed class, plus a day, to make up their work.
- Work is due at the beginning of each class.
- Work that is not turned in will be entered as a zero with an 'M' for Missing
- Once work has been turned in, the grade will be changed and the 'M' will change to 'L' for Late.
Work that is not completed after the prescribed final deadline for the quarter will remain a zero.
- Late work will be graded after all other on time assignments have been graded.
- Late work will be graded for full marks, but the Academic Responsibility category will go down 1-5 points, depending on the timeliness.
• The course is graded 0-100 on the three following National Standards:
1. Connecting/Responding (20%)
(Written Work - tests, quizzes, projects)
2. Creating (20%)
(Musical Process - rehearsal skills & playing checks)
3. Performance (50%)
(Musical Product - required performances)
4. Academic Responsibility (10%)
Students start with 100 in this category at the beginning of each quarter.
The Academic Responsibility grade will go down for the following:
-Not being prepared for class (missing materials and/or not prepared for discussion/performancel)
-Late work (written work and/or performances)
-Other infringements of the music rehearsal expectations (see Article IV)
1-5 points will be deducted based on the nature of the lack of Academic Responsibility and the reason for the deduction will be noted in the comments.

• School rules for academic integrity and cheating apply.
• IF STUDENTS NEED EXTRA HELP, PLEASE SEE THE INSTRUCTOR BEFORE THE SITUATION BECOMES OVERWHELMING.
IX. PERFORMANCE ATTENDANCE POLICY:
Band members are expected to be present at all required performances.
Concerts and pep band performances are considered part of the music curriculum. Please use the
“Calendar of Events” to make arrangements with your employer, sports teams, and family.
For an excused absence, a note or e-mail from the parent/legal guardian must be presented to the
director and approved two weeks before the performance. Unforeseen situations such as a
family emergency, death in the family, or extreme illness are excused if a note is brought in
when the student returns to school.
Unexcused absences occur if the concert is missed due to a conflict with work or a personal day.
Failure to notify the director before the two-week period will also make the absence unexcused.
Not attending a required performance will impact the quarterly grade, unless it is made up.
Excused, and unexcused, absences need to be made up if credit is to be given.
A performance exam and forty-five minutes of service to the band will take the place of an excused absence. A performance exam and three hours of service/music lesson will take the place of an unexcused absence.
X. UNIFORMS / CONCERT ATTIRE:
Please see Mr. Potvin if you are unable to find the required uniform.
PLEASE DO NOT WAIT FOR THE DAY OF THE PERFORMANCE :)
A. The uniforms for the three formal concerts (Winter, Spring, All Band Night) will be:
Black dress pants or long black skirt to the floor, black close-toed shoes, black socks/pantyhose, conservative black top with sleeves. Necktie/bowtie/scarf optional.
B. For the two formal parades (Homecoming and Memorial Day) students will wear the band uniform (pants, jacket, and hat) and closed-toe black dress shoes with black socks/nylons.
C. For the pep band performances, students will be assigned a blue wind-breaker.
D. For the class night and graduation ceremony, choice of:
1. Conservative dress that goes below the knee when seated and has sleeves.
2. Conservative skirt that goes below the knee when seated & modest top with sleeves.
3. Dress pants, collared shirt, dress shoes and socks. Tie optional.
*No t-shirts, tank tops, shorts, tennis shoes, or jeans.

XII. EQUIPMENT, INSTRUMENTS, AND REEDS:
• Music & Arts stops at the school every week for supplies. (TUESDAY)
• Reeds, valve oil, music and other musical supplies to be delivered to school should be bought
from Music & Arts ahead of time. You can even purchase items online via their website.

• Emergency reeds can be purchased at school for the following prices:
• $3.00 for Rico Royal & $4.00 for Vandoren
• It is recommended that instruments are sent away during the summer or other school
vacations for tune-ups so students have a working instrument in good condition.
• See Mr. Potvin for repair shop recommendations prior to work being done.
If considering purchasing an instrument, Mr. Potvin can also help assist in this process.
XIII. FESTIVALS / COMPETITION:
Music festivals are a great way for musicians to challenge themselves and gain further experience.
By filling out an audition form, you are taking responsibility for a scheduled audition time. By filling out the form, you are committing to both the audition and festival dates listed on the calendar.
It is expected that auditionees will perform their piece for Mr. Potvin two weeks prior to the audition date
to make sure every student is prepared.
Students are asked to pay the nominal audition fee. Cash or checks are acceptable. Checks can be made out to “KHS Music.” If students are accepted into the ensemble, the music program will pay for the transportation and acceptance fees (which is between $75-$350 per student).
